Puerto Colón, the marina behind the Adeje rides

If you are staying on the Adeje coast, your ride almost certainly starts at Puerto Colón. The marina lies in Adeje, with its office in the Capitanía building on Avenida de Colón.1 Several of the island's jet ski tours meet on its pontoons, and the one this page recommends gathers at gate 9. Arrive with time to spare, because the pontoons are long and the gates look much alike.

Right beside the marina is La Pinta, a beach where the water stays calm thanks to the breakwaters.3 It is 180 m long and 40 m wide, small enough that you can walk it before your ride.4 Turismo de Tenerife lists water bike outings, scuba diving and parascending among the activities there.5 It makes an easy place to wait for a friend who is riding the later slot, and its calm water behind the breakwaters is a pleasant place for the non-riders of the group to swim meanwhile.

Getting a jet ski from Puerto Colón out to open water follows strict rules. Inside channels and marinas the speed limit is 3 knots.6 Several tours take you out by speedboat first and hand over the machines away from the harbor traffic. Once you are clear, the guide sets the pace and the formation for the rest of the hour.

On the pontoon, before anyone starts an engine.

    Photos and a swim

A short stop to cool off and catch your breath.

  5. 25 minutes

    The second leg

More riding, then the speedboat brings you back.

How the hour is split on the gate 9 tour

The tour booked on this page lasts 1 hour and keeps groups to 6 riders. It opens with a 5-minute safety briefing, then a 5-minute speedboat ride out to the jet skis. Guides speak English, French, Italian and Spanish, which helps when you want to ask a question before you set off. It starts from $81 and averages 4.65 from 246 reviews.

On the water you ride along the Costa Adeje shore for 20 minutes, stop for 5 minutes for photos and a swim, then ride another 25 minutes before the speedboat brings you back in 5 minutes. That swim stop is the moment to stretch your hands, which tire faster than you expect on choppy water. Hold the bars loosely and let your knees take the bumps. Sit slightly forward, look where you want to go rather than at the water just ahead, and use small, smooth movements of the throttle; the machine reacts quickly, and a jerky hand is what throws riders off balance.

The briefing matters even on a short tour. Spanish rules require it before anyone uses the machines, given by one of the instructors, on handling and the basic rules of navigation.7 Listen for the hand signals your guide will use, because the engines are loud and you will not hear much once the group is moving. If something is unclear, ask on the pontoon, not at sea.

The other rides from the same marina

A sister tour from the same gate runs 40 minutes to 1 hour and adds an optional photo service. It starts from $81 and averages 4.71 from 227 reviews. Its shared double jet ski takes up to 170 kg for driver and passenger together, so pairs should check their combined weight before booking one seat.

A third Puerto Colón operator works from its own office, with changing rooms and lockers, and wants you there 30 minutes or more before the trip. Its 1-hour safari passes beaches such as Diego Hernández and Las Vistas, pauses 3 minutes at La Caleta de Adeje, and has a rescue guide following in a Zodiac. It starts from $63 and averages 4.68 from 217 reviews.

For a short taste, a circuit next to gate 5 sends riders around 4 orange buoys laid out in a square for 20 minutes. That listing asks drivers to be 18, and passengers 6. It suits anyone who wants to feel the throttle without following a group along the coast, though it has very few reviews so far.

A jet ski safari tour off Las Américas

This player stays empty, and YouTube unasked, until you start the clip.

Riding a jet ski at Playa de las Américas

Las Américas sits just south of Puerto Colón, and the shore between them is lined with hotels and beaches. If you search for a jet ski at Playa de las Américas, you will find that the rides there start from the same marina or are collected by transfer. One 1-hour tour from Puerto Colón runs along the Las Américas coast, from $139.

Another route works the other way along the shore. A 1-hour double ride from Costa Adeje heads either to Playa San Juan or to Los Cristianos, and you reach the instructor by boat. It starts from $63. A pricier safari picks you up in Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas or Costa Adeje and rides for 1 hour, from $168.

The beaches you pass are some of the island's best known. Troya I and II are two of the longest established tourist beaches of Costa Adeje, and they hold the Blue Flag.1810 Fañabé stretches for 600 m, and El Duque, also a Blue Flag beach, runs for 390 m along a promenade that links it with at least 8 other beaches.89

Rules close to the beaches of Adeje

This is a busy coast, and the rules keep riders well away from swimmers. Personal watercraft may not enter buoyed bathing zones at all, and use marked launch channels at the ends of beaches at no more than 3 knots.2 Where a stretch of coast has no buoyed zone, riding is banned in the 200 m strip nearest the shore.19 The beach you see from the water is closer than it looks.

Every craft carries a safety plate that forbids coming closer than 50 m to another jet ski, a floating device, a ship or a boat.20 Riding is allowed only in daylight, from 1 hour after sunrise to 1 hour before sunset.21 You will not be judging these distances alone: the guide sets the line and the spacing, and your job is to hold it.

Out at sea you are near the Teno-Rasca marine strip, a Special Area of Conservation of 69,489.68 ha that washes the coasts of Adeje and Arona, among others.22 Loggerhead and green turtles are regularly present in its waters.23 Spanish rules set an exclusion zone of at least 60 m around any whale or dolphin, and a craft that finds one closer puts its engine in neutral.2425

Getting there and planning your morning

From most hotels in Costa Adeje or Las Américas, Puerto Colón is a short walk or taxi ride along the seafront. Plan to arrive early: one operator asks for 30 minutes before the trip, and finding the right gate takes a moment. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel for afterwards.

Book the slot that suits your day. A morning ride leaves the afternoon free for the beach, and the briefing is easier to follow before the sun gets strong. Keep the evening in mind too, since riding stops 1 hour before sunset.21 If the sea is rough, the harbour master can change riding zones or stop riding altogether for a while.26

Pick the tour by what you want from the hour. The gate 9 tour gives you a small group and a swim stop; the office-based ride gives you changing rooms and a rescue boat at a lower starting price. If you would rather see cliffs than hotels, our Los Gigantes page shows the ride on the west coast instead. And if you are torn between them, remember that Puerto Colón is the easier morning: no long drive, a beach next to the gate, and lunch on the seafront afterwards.
